present perfect continuous : have been + -ing : I have been waiting for an hour

Repère 2

past perfect : had + participe passé : when I arrived, the film had started

Repère 3

future continuous : will be + -ing : at 8 pm I will be working ; future perfect : will have + participe passé : by Friday I will have finished

Repère 4

voix passive : be + participe passé : the letter was written by Ann ; the room is cleaned every day

Repère 5

passif aux temps composés : the car has been repaired ; the house had been sold

Repère 6

have something done : I had my hair cut ; get something done : she got her bike repaired

Méthode

  2. Be au bon temps + participe passé.
  3. By seulement quand il apporte quelque chose.

Exemple expliqué

Present perfect or past simple

  1. Choisir le temps. Le present perfect relie le passé au présent (since, already, never, how long) ; le past simple situe un fait terminé à un moment précis (in 2010, last year, in 2015).

  2. Réponses. (1) have lived ; (2) started ; (3) have already visited ; (4) went ; (5) stayed ; (6) have never been ; (7) have you known ; (8) met.

have lived ; started ; have already visited ; went ; stayed ; have never been ; have you known ; met

type 0 : If you heat ice, it melts (vérité générale) ; type 1 : If it rains, we will stay at home (if + présent, will + infinitif)

Repère 2

type 2 : If I had more time, I would learn Chinese (if + past simple, would + infinitif), une hypothèse peu probable ou irréelle au présent

Repère 3

type 3 : If she had studied, she would have passed (if + past perfect, would have + participe passé), irréel du passé

Repère 4

mixte : If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now

Repère 5

wish et if only : I wish I had a car ; I wish I had known

Repère 6

subordonnées de temps au futur : when, as soon as, before, after + présent : I will call you as soon as I arrive

Méthode

  1. Réel, peu probable, irréel du passé.
  2. Regret ou souhait.

Conditionals and wishes

  1. Trois conditionnels. Réel ou probable : if + présent, will + base verbale. Irréel du présent : if + past simple, would + base verbale. Irréel du passé : if + past perfect, would have + participe passé. Unless signifie if ... not. Après wish et if only, on utilise le past simple (were pour tous les sujets, was aussi accepté) ou could.

  2. Réponses. (1) will stay ; (2) would buy ; (3) had known ; (4) had studied ; (5) unless ; (6) could ; (7) were (ou was) ; (8) weren't (ou wasn't).

will stay ; would buy ; had known ; had studied ; unless ; could ; were ; weren't

discours indirect au passé : recul des temps : 'I am tired', she said, devient she said (that) she was tired

Repère 2

changements de repères : now devient then ; today, that day ; tomorrow, the next day ; here, there ; this, that

Repère 3

questions indirectes : 'Where do you live ?' devient He asked where I lived (ordre affirmatif, pas de do)

Repère 4

ordres : 'Sit down !' devient He told me to sit down ; He asked me not to be late

Repère 5

verbes de report : say, tell, ask, explain, suggest, promise, warn

Repère 6

relatives : who, which, that, whose ; sans pronom quand il est complément : the film (that) I saw

Méthode

  1. Présent devient passé ; passé devient past perfect.
  2. Now, here, today changent.
  3. Ordre affirmatif.

Exemple expliqué

Reported speech and relative clauses

  1. Règles du discours indirect. Le verbe recule d'un temps (présent devient past simple, will devient would, past simple devient past perfect) ; les pronoms et les indicateurs de temps changent (I devient he ou she, tomorrow devient the next day). Une question directe perd son inversion : pas de do, l'ordre est celui d'une phrase affirmative, avec if ou whether pour une question fermée. Un ordre négatif devient told + personne + not to + verbe.

  2. Réponses. a) Tom said he was tired. b) Anna told me she would call me the next day. c) She asked me where I lived. d) Peter asked Mary if she had enjoyed the film. e) The teacher told us not to open the window. f) This is the woman who lives next door to me.

a) Tom said he was tired. b) Anna told me she would call me the next day. c) She asked me where I lived. d) Peter asked Mary if she had enjoyed the film. e) The teacher told us not to open the window. f) This is the woman who lives next door to me.

infinitif sans to après les modaux, make et let : She made me laugh ; He let me go

Repère 4

la forme en -ing comme nom : Swimming is good for you

Repère 5

phrasal verbs : give up, find out, look after, turn down, set up, carry on ; le sens ne se devine pas toujours, il se mémorise avec un exemple

Repère 6

mots de liaison : although, even though, however, in spite of, because of, so that, otherwise, as a result

Méthode

  1. Le verbe qui précède décide.
  3. Opposition, cause, but, conséquence.

Exemple expliqué

Saying it another way

  1. Reformuler. Reformuler, c'est garder le sens et changer la structure : regret devient wish + past perfect ; so ... that devient too ... to ; un fait qui commence dans le passé et continue devient present perfect avec for ; like more than devient prefer ... to ; un verbe soutenu devient un phrasal verb ; although devient in spite of ou despite suivis d'un nom.

  2. Réponses. a) I wish I had studied harder. b) It was too cold to go out. c) She has been learning English for ten years. d) I prefer swimming to running. e) Please turn off the light. f) In spite of the rain, we went for a walk.

Correction

  1. Choisir le temps
